Finally posted some videos to YouTube (my first time).
Caught this at Big Bay back in 2/22/13. I had to speed home to the west loop to grab my video camera. This was before I had a decent camera on my phone. I was only able to catch them leaving Goose Island. Wish I captured more but better than nothing.
Unfortunately, this is the only video I was ever able to get of this operation

General Discussion / ADM mill being demolished
« on: February 13, 2021, 12:50:04 PM »
The subject says it all. Sterling Bay was going to try to re-purpose part of it but apparently it's all coming down. I lived right across the tracks from here. My son and I spent many hours watching the evening switch job. He developed a love for trains; a nice hobby we'll always be able to share.
One of these years, when I have free time, I'll post the numerous videos I took of those switching jobs.
With Continental Paper Grading being relocated,  the only immediate downtown area industries left are Tribune and Blommer. And we all know that Trib plans on selling off that land in the near future.

General Discussion / 1995 Metra Milw west on YouTube
« on: September 14, 2020, 02:11:23 PM »
Found this video on an inbound Metra ride on the Milw west line ftom 1995. Nice document to see how area has changed.

I had read that a stub of the CNW low line was kept and used for a recycling industry.  This video shows a boxcar spotted just west of Racine.  The only other evidence I've ever seen was Tom Burke's picture from '97.

General Discussion / 1998 pics of Soo switching Goose Island
« on: September 04, 2020, 11:40:34 AM »
I added some pics of a Soo SW1500 switching Goose Island in 1998 to my flickr account.

They are scans of prints. Hopefully will find the negatives one day.
I approved them to be added to the Chicago Switching Milwaukee Road flickr group. I would like to join this group but it says I have to be invited.  Guessing that account is run by somebody on this site?  If so, please send an invite my way.

Went by ADM mill today and saw no hoppers. Found article online that said the new Mendota mill just started operation.

Lower level of Blommer finally has a bumper after all these years. Not the best pic. Shot on the move through my passenger side window.

General Discussion / Tribune Tower rail pics?
« on: September 03, 2019, 08:42:51 PM »
Are there any pics of newsprint boxcars at Tribune Tower? Through this website I've learned that early on they received paper rolls via the river. I believe Tom Burke stated that they switched over to rail at some point? What year might that be? Were there ever boxcars spotted at the Tower down on North Water St. like the Sun-Times had?

General Discussion / 90s Metra police car pics needed
« on: March 19, 2019, 09:53:13 PM »
A little off topic but I figured a good place to ask. I'm specifically looking for pics circa 1997.

This shot is from roughly 4 years ago.

I also found one from 1989.

Looking to make ho scale decals for my eventual layout.

General Discussion / City looking to purchsse C&E line.

They talk of implementing bus, tram, and light rail as options. Article says line would connect to Grand Ave. through Tribune property. Maybe they'll follow the Navy Pier line. In that case I wonder if the Carroll bridge would most likely be in the lowered position.

General Discussion / Chicago Tribune truck pics needed
« on: February 24, 2018, 10:29:40 AM »
I've spent hours searching for pics of Tribune trucks (semis and delivery) from the mid-90s and have come up empty handed. Was the paint scheme the same as today?

I've seen a pic where the Tribune Herald was on a diagonal. I have not been able to find it again. The only thing I could find was a toy truck dated 1988.

Also trying to figure out what brand f tractors were in use then. Currently they are Sterling.

Any pics would be most welcomed.

Thanks,
Joe

Also, a nice pic of Kinzie St. Yard as seen from Sears Tower in '78.

General Discussion / BFI recycling on Navy Pier line
« on: January 31, 2016, 01:38:59 PM »
I remember reading somewhere of a short lived BFI recycling operation on the Navy Pier line. Sounds like the branch was truncated and was simply used as a spur. Anyone know the time frame of this? Where exactly was the recycling?  I'm guessing it was between Racine and May by the Pensy signal bridge.
