Nobody!?!?  OK, I\'ll go first.  My name is Chuck, I am 33 years old.  I work for a trade show photography company in Chicago, live in the western burbs. I grew up in the rail triangle of BNSF/CCP(IC)/IHB.  I have always been a train geek, but it slowed once the new locomotive became so generic.  Now I focus on shortlines, regionals and critters.

I also developed this eye toward abandoned buildings, and photograph them.  Both exterior and interior.  Check out my web pages for train and ruins photos.  The new one is a work in progress but the old one has some content.

I enjoyed browsing your websites.  The old Dixie Square Mall reminds me of the place where they filmed Dawn of the Dead.

BTW, I actually visited Shireland during the one year it was open apparently, 1991.  The buildings and exhibits had a homemade feel to them, but that was part of the charm.

Chuck,

The bulldozers sit still for no one. It looks like you got to some of those places just in time.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the kind words!

Tom B, so you were one of the 10 people that went to Shireland?!?!  It is a very odd place.

Dixie Square is amazing too, only in Harvey!  It is the mall that the Blues Brothers car chase scene was filmed in. A documentary is in the works: http://www.dixiesquare.com

Thanks again,

Chuck,

The new Popular Photography (March 2007) has a fairly large feature devoted to urban exploration and the kind of stuff you\'re photographing.

If you haven\'t seen it yet, by all means check it out. It\'s a keeper.

Hi every one the name is cpcolin. I am currently residing in NW Burbs. I lived on the NW side most of my life by the Weber Line. I have watched Mayfair Lumber switched by CNW and the UP. I found your site a while back on the links page on a train club page. I just want to say that this site is a gem. Keep up the good work.

Hi all!

My name is Ian M. Contreras.....Im 17.......a student at Lane Tech on Chicago\'s northside.......

My friends and I shot the CP switcher on Goose Island a couple of times over the summer and I found this site later on.......really fed my appatite......

I lived over by Mayfair Jct. from age 2 til\' about 12 so I had a huge interest in the CNW Weber Line, Skokie Valley, and 40th St. line........anyone know the status on those?
My mom used to work downtown....and I remember seeing the UP\'s Navy Peir job (more like newspaper job) run over the Chicago river near OTC (Northwetern Station)a couple of times......and my grandparents live remotely close to the Lakewood Branch.......so thats where my interest in these lines come from.......

I applaud everyones hard work on the site.......one of the most important sites about the general Chicago area..........as a random question.....does anyone have an interest in the CTA also?

Welcome to the website, and thank you for your comments.

There\'s an excellent CTA fan website which is run by Graham Garfield.  It\'s at:

www.chicago-l.org

That\'s a lower-case L in the domain name, not a number 1.

Hi everyone!

I\'m Matt Lastovich, going to be 18 in less than a month, currently a senior at Morton West HS, and I\'ve lived in Berwyn, IL my whole life...those of you who don\'t know where that is it’s right by the BNSF Cicero yard and CNIC Hawthorne yard. I’m also a huge Wisconsin Central fan……

Ian and I are good friends; I joined him over the past summer to chase around the Kingsbury switcher on our bikes. It had a MILW bandit both times which was really cool. I\'ve always been interested in street running....I guess we could thank the people at Pentrex for the Today’s Chicago Railroads.....LOL.....I really didn\'t think I\'d actually get a chance to shoot it.

I hope to make it down to catch the last run on the Lakewood branch!

Tom, others-

I have a VHS copy of the Pentrex video on street running freight operations.  They have a very short snippet-perhaps a minute or less-of video of a Soo Line train running down Kingsbury in the North Avenue area.

I was disappointed overall with this Pentrex video since it mostly featured boring runbys of trains with no switching as I recall.  If you can get it cheaply then it is worth viewing.

The Pentrex video \"Juice\" on electric freight operations in the 1990s (Iowa Terminal, East Troy, WI, and the now gone Pearl Brewery operation in San Antonio) is far superior if you like shortline and switching action.

It\'s a little OT, but speaking of Pearl Brewery in San Antonio, I accidentally blew a roll of film on it the week before they ripped it out, if anyone\'s interested.  I\'d have to scan the photos.

BTW, I\'m Taylor, and while I\'ve contributed a few things in the past, I only now got around to joining the forum.  Grew up in the NW \'burbs and chased the Kingsbury job back when it was busy :(  I\'m currently working on a layout that incorporates many of the industries and general flavor of the area that this website covers.  Someday I\'ll post some photos, but for now the construction continues at a furious pace!

Hi Guys/Gals:

I was introduced to this web site at the LaGrange/AARS train show this weekend.  My compliments on this web site, it is great.  I live up on the NW side of Chicago, near the Dunning branch.  I am a HO scale modeler (Chessie C&O), my web site is; http://www.MrTrains.com

I have an interest in learing more about North Ave. Yard operations and I am very interested in the outing on April 10th.

Hello everyone,

My name is Clifton Linton. I live in Alameda, CA. I am originally from the Chicago area.

I found this web site thru Bill Denton\'s web site.

My interest lies in industrial switching and belt line operations. I used to live on the Northside about 6 blocks east of the line to Peerless. Sorry to hear that is OOS with Peerless closing.

I am attempting an N-scale layout based roughly on some of the Northside switching scenes. The Bloomer Chocolate factory has always fascinated me and will be the basis for a signature industry on my layout. I will take modeller\'s license and overlay BRC and Chessie system on the layout.

Thanks to everyone for creating and supporting this valuable web site.

Regards,

Howdy, my name is Mark Hintz, but you may know me better by my username and nickname, Fuzzy.  Or, from my website, Fuzzy World 3.  I figured I\'ve nosed around this forum long enough, might as well join!

While the CP runs about 1/4 mile to the east of my apartment, and UP and CN have presences in Milwaukeeland as well, my main interest is the Wisconsin & Southern -- as well as the \"critters\" on Jones Island, or anyplace else there\'s an industrial-type switcher to be seen.  Shortlines and industrial operations tend to be my favorites, and even the Class 1 locals in the area.

The main reason I found this site is that somebody posted a link to one of the photos on my site, and I followed the link back...  Thanks to whoever did that, as I\'ve found some rather interesting information via this forum!

I\'ll be heading down that way either Friday or Monday for a couple of quick work tasks, with my day completed with some railfan photography of the shortline switching operations.  Anybody interested in meeting up with me, send me an e-mail and I\'ll reply with my cell phone #.

Well, enough playing around on the internet -- gotta get up tomorrow and get some work done! :P

I probably linked your photo. I like your site a lot and I am a biker as well. I am interested in the branch line that serves customers where ADM is off Mitchell Ave. and Lincoln Ave. Do they have 2 plants off both those streets? It looks like it from Google Satellite. Can you give the name of other customers that were served on that branch line that either exist today or did sometime from the 1970\'s forward? I believe this branch line connected with the CNW yard further south down the line. Is that the Airline Yard?  Thanks for any clarifications.

Matt, were you addressing me?  I\'ve never worked in Thiensville, for the record, though I used to have a job site in Mequon, just for the record.

GM, the ADM facility on Mitchell is now an empty lot. :(  The facility closer to Lincoln is Froedtert Malt, and is one of the very few remaining customers on the line.  The old Hotpoint factory west of 43rd St. has been torn down, and replaced with Pick \'n\' Save/Menards. :(  No rail service, and the tracks that crossed the street are no more.  CP currently operates the line, which connects to the CP/SOO/MILW Airline Yard on the north end, and UP/CNW Mitchell Yard on the south end.  This line was once a joint MILW-CNW property, but UP swapped it to CP for some property in the Twin Cities.  For a list of customers, pop on over to my \"3um\", we\'ve got a bunch of people more knowledgeable about the area.

Hi,

My name is Greg and I live in the Northwestern Twin Cities area.

I found this website through reading an issue of Milwakee Railroader at a friends operating session last night that had a story about the Deering branch.

I grew up in Naperville IL and my dad and grandfather both worked for the CB&Q but at different ends of the system.

I have had an interest in urban/street railroading and am going to try my hand at doing some free lance modelling of a warehouse area.

I think this site has great information and look to use that info to help with building my layout.

Being a transplant from the Chicago area (albeit quite a while ago) I recognize some of the area of North side of Chicago.

Thank you for putting up a great website and sharing your collected informantion.

No, actually we\'re with the MN Transp. Museum, it is the passenger operations on CN/WC\'s Dresser Sub.  We\'re an all volunteer outfit with a fair number of us who are railroaders during the week and then work as mechanics, crews, etc. on the weekends.

The St Croix Valley Railroad north of us in Rush City is affiliated with the MN Northern and Dakota Northern.  With names so close we\'ve been mixed up on the past.

We don\'t have any ties with TC&W on the OSCV though at work they are one of our clients...

Hi all, I\'m Jeff Wingstrom and stumbled onto the site recently.  I\'ve always had a fascination with urban switching, not sure how it started.  I think it\'s a mixture of interests in archeology and nostalgia..

I live near Wrigley Field in Chicago, and often bike to work down Waveland Ave.  I always noticed rails peeking thru the asphalt near the ballpark, and one day decided to read up on it.  That\'s how I found this great site!

Anyhow, I followed the old C&E route south from Wrigley and took some random pics last weekend, here\'s the link.  It\'s a little slow..

Hi all--

My name\'s John Walker.  I\'ve been following the website for a while now and think it\'s great.  I grew up in Fresno, CA, and now live in St. Helens, OR.  I\'m a literature and writing professor at Pacific University.  I\'ve just completed the basic benchwork for an N-scale model railroad to depict--something.  I think the Lakewood Branch street running section, although the Deering line seemed to have more heavy industry, which I like.  Either way, I\'ll be hitting y\'all up for ideas and info on operations, details, and so on.  I live an awfully long way away.  (By the way, I\'m a Cubs fan, and a Milwaukee Road fan with a penchant for urban switching, hence my interest in the area.)

Thanks to one and all for putting this site together.

I just found out today (UGH!) that the Lakewood Branch had stopped service and have spent most of 18 hours devouring the info and pictures.

I also grew up and currently live in the western \'burbs BN/IHB/IC, but was raised on streetcars and interurbans primarily.

I toured the Lakewood Branch in the early 90s on my bike and always meant to get some pics.  I\'m glad you all have been so thorough over the years.

I appreciate all the info each of you leaves on this site.  I\'ve some DNA in Chicago Railroading which helps boost my interest in railroadiana and modeling.  My paternal grandfather retired on a R.R. pension in \'68 after 50 years at the Union Stockyards.  He followed his father there.  In his retirement he would visit the R.R. Retirement Bd. HQ\'d at Rush/State and Chestnut. My maternal grandfather\'s career was at the Stewart\'s Coffee warehouse on N.Water St. on the Navy Pier/Carroll Ave. line.  My father\'s career was on the same line first with the Tribune then the Sun-Times retiring in \'96.  As an attorney I\'ve little contact with railroading.  Appearing at the old Chicago Traffic Court on the river @ 321 N. LaSalle I would often see geeps switching pulp box cars on Carroll Ave. to the SunTimes.  Down at 26th&Cal. I would see AT&SF geeps on the ancient CB&Q branch line that arches past the jail. One grade crossing at the blvd. there was pulled-up a few years ago.  Just today a service pickup truck crew was cutting a remaining crossing gate signal from its mount.  How times change.

Hi, my name is Quintin. I reside in Sacramento, CA. I stumbled on the website via by an article of Bill Denton, n scale model of MILW\'s Kingsbury branch on the north side of Chicago. I was born and raised on Chgo\'s southside 95th and Stony Island.

This web site is great!!! I was curious about the railroad the crossed CNW @ North Ave. Now after reviewing this web site, it has answered a lot of questions. Especally, that bridge @ Enkai Steel.

Question, when did SOO/CP abandon the Bloomington Line and pulled up the diamonds?

Google Earth gives me a good look at the line and the industies in the area.
Title: Introduce Yourself!
Post by: TBurke on December 06, 2008, 08:38:52 PM
CP Rail  has not formally abandoned the former Milwaukee Road Bloomingdale Line though it no longer operates over it east of Drake Avenue.  It is considered out-of-service but not yet officially abandoned in a legal sense.

CP Rail decided it was less expensive to taxi crews in and out of the UP North Avenue yard and keep a switcher there versus maintaining the long Bloomingdale viaduct which generated no revenue of its own since there were no on-line industries between the Kennedy Expressway and Pacific Junction.  CP leased space from the UP at North Avenue as does CTR today.  It helps UP since they get 100% of the interchange now for points on the former Milwaukee Road C&E and Deering Line plus Goose Island versus none if CP took the cars to and from their own lines at Pacific Junction by using the Bloomingdale Line.

In addition there would be no hassles with waiting for permission to cross the busy Metra/UP line or maintaining the diamond.

Hello all! And Happy holidays too.  I would like introduce myself. My name is Shawn O\'Day and I live in Flat Rock Michigan.  I became very interested in the \"Chicago Northside switching area\" in the late 1990\'s while dating my future wife.  She worked dayshift at the Wishbone resturant and we drove southbound Halstead from her apartment near Irving Park in the early hours.  Meanwhile I was into exploring and mapping all kinds of RR tracks , usually here around Michigan, Ohio and some eastern Pennsylvania.  So needless to say the old tracks around the areas peeked my curiousity.  I started to ask questions on one of the few railroad \"listserve\" type discussion boards and John Mika replied and answered them all.  The rest is written on the history section of this fine website.

With some actual knowledge gained of the area I started to explore and make map sketches of the MILW and C&NW north of the two Depots.   Doing this on the weekend in the early moning hours was relatively easy traffic-wise compared to the normal workday auto traffic and there seemed to be quite a few relics and remnants of old trackage and industries left.   Back then I did not appreciate the value of a good camera and regrettably did not take photos  very much.  The few I did take I finally scanned and sent them on to Tom.  I wrote up some captions offering up tidbits of some details noticed while making the maps.  I am currently redrawing these and will scan them as well.

Cheers
Shawn

Hi, Im Chris. I was introduced to this site through Forgotten Chicago. I\'ve had a fascination with trains since I was a kid. I plan on modeling a train set one of these days, time permitting. I looked into the Lakewood branch after having an SIUC fuction at Wellington Tavern. I noticed a set of railroad tracks in the middle of the street in a residential area. I know about Chicago\'s manufacturing past and was fascinated. My great grandfather worked for the railroads in the late 1800s to the early 1900s. He also lived in West Town near Armitage and Milwaukee. I really enjoy this site. Very interesting info.

My name is Reinhard from Germany. We live in the Southwest close to the black forrest. Some of you may have noticed my activities in the Big Blue forum over the last years.
My layout is under constant change as i would love to built 100 layouts but have only space for one....

Chicago has a special affection to me. It was the US city of my very first US business trip as a young professional about 35 years ago and I returned many time. I am retired since two years but the first city is like the first love ;-) I have so many good memories .....

I could have visited all the railroad places easily but I had no interest in US railroading at that time. The lack of internet would have made it very complicated to get information.

Glad to be with you

Glad to have you join us.

One day I plan on modeling the Reichsbahn of the DDR (East Germany) era in N-scale.  On a visit to Eisenach in 2006 I picked up an N-scale RB diesel switcher.

Something like this setting.

I like the diversity of railroads in the former DDR from narrow gauge steam to solar-powered streetcar lines.

I had a small H0m layout prior to my US layouts. There is still some steam and diesel stuff hidden in my cabinets. The steam models were mostly kits from Weinert and cost a fortune but I am not the right guy to get them perfect. The small radius possible with narrow gauge and the small engines and cars are a great advantage in limited space.

Sadly, I saw neither in operation, so sites like this are invaluable to me.  My other railroad related interests are car ferries of the Great Lakes and New York City, urban and branch lines and freight cars.

I don't have a whole lot to offer to this forum, but I'm glad to be apart of it and I'm looking forward to learning more about the subject at hand.  Eventually I would like to apply this info and build a small HO scale proto-freelanced urban switching layout based on the Milwaukee Road.

Thanks

The brewery pictures might be nice but we'd love to see the layout pictures more!

Hi,

I realize I may be the first new member to post here in some time. I have known about Chicago Switching for a while, along with several other resources out there. I grew up in Chicago in the 70s to mid 90s on the 1300 block of Melrose, about 1 block from the C&E / Lakewood branch crossing Melrose. I have vague early memories of the Milwaukee Road power occasionally being seen crossing Melrose.

My brother, neighbor and I batted around a Chicago style 16" softball right next t the tracks crossing Melrose, and would often have to fetch the ball off of a factory roof. One time I took some needle nose plyers and opened up the equipment cabinet for the crossing signals on Belmont, long after trains stopped coming around. A cop car pulled over, scared the crap out of me and my brother, told us to go home and took my plyers. In retrospect, that was appropriate. But exploring that cabinet was fun.

I live in western Massachusetts now and have a strong interest in the Central Vermont circa 1980 (similar to C&NW colors), but I am also working on Freemo modules to represent the C&E crossing Belmont and Melrose, with the siding to Reed. Right now working on a Athearn Genesis MILW MP15AC redoing the decoder and adding a ton of micro LED lighting. Looking forward also to Rapido's MILW SW1200s, of which I have ordered one.

Glad to be here and hoping to contribute.

Regards,
Ethan

Welcome!

16" softball does mark you as a Chicagoan.

This board used to be more active a few years ago but with local switching operations now vanished on Chicago's North Side there is less new material for discussions.

Hi everyone, my name is Rob, I've been a longtime reader of this board but haven't posted until now.  I've always had a curiosity about the random train lines snaking through the city and found this site one day.  I've learned a lot here!

While I grew up in the suburbs, my grandmother lived on the far north side, and I was always a bit obsessed with the Cragin line running through Chicago and Lincolnwood (I think).  In the 90's, it was very rare to see a train on the weekends when we would be in the city, but it happened once or twice.  I recall they were always the randomest of engines and train sets, at least to my youthful mind.

I believe a forum member here has posted a lengthy video of Cragin line action, which was fascinating to watch.

As an adult, I've been a bike commuter in the city, heading from Lincoln Park/Lake View to the Illinois Medical District area.  Goose Island has always been a logical route for me, so I've watched the ebb and flow of the Chicago Terminal over the past years.  I'll never forget the day in which I biked to work with everything "normal" on the line - empty, no action.  When I came home, there were tanker cars parked all over the line.  Quite a surprise!  I was lucky to also catch the removal of the tankers at the North Ave. crossing.

I don't have pictures or anything to add, but just wanted to share my appreciation for this board as a learning tool and historical resource, especially as switching lines slowly disappear.  I'll chime in as I can moving forward!
